Just a few days after I arrived here I decided to ride my bike into nearby Leiden to do a bit of exploring. The Dutch LOVE their bikes but everyone was quite shocked that I rode by myself into the city after only being here for three days. Walking around Leiden I found it very charming.
It is a smaller city, a former port city and the birthplace of both Jan Steen and Rembrandt van Rijn. The population of the city is quite young because of the University located there, so sometimes I feel a bit like an old lady, but that's alright. I caught some good weather and the last bits of flowers before the cold settled in.
Later explorations in Leiden have let me to discover some of its historic charm, like the Burcht van Leiden, an old shell keep located between the Oude and Nieuw Rijn.
