  • As you might have noticed on this website I use both Holland and The Netherlands interchangeably. The official name of the country is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Holland actually only means the two provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland, but these have always been the two most prosperous regions in the country, therefore the name Holland was and is often used when all of the Netherlands is meant. In addition, due to a history of colonialism, six Caribbean islands are still part of the Netherlands: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Curacao, Aruba and Saba.

  • The Netherlands is the 2nd largest exporter of food in the world, after the U.S., which is quite amazing considering the small size of the country.
